“Morning, baby.”

I startle and jump, spinning around instantly to the voice—the voice I know is my husband’s but still scares me.

I woke up an hour ago and decided to do things differently this morning. I’ve always been an early riser, however, over time, Lawson has been the one who gets up the earliest. Typically, he would be sitting at the bar reading the paper drinking his coffee when I came downstairs.

Many mornings, I would sit two steps from the bottom with a direct view to him sitting on the stool and just watch him. Then, times changed gradually, and I would eventually start waking up to Lawson already gone for the day.

So, this morning, I am making sure that doesn’t happen.

“Good morning. I’m making breakfast.”

With a smirk, he replies softly, “See that, gorgeous.”

I don’t let the things hearing that voice does to me show. If he looked closely, he would see the goosebumps on my arms.

“Waffles and pancakes,” I tell him.

“Sounds good.” He takes the few steps to reach the counter where the coffee pot is, pours his cup, turns, leans his backside against the edge of the counter, and watches as I mosey about the kitchen.

We don’t talk.

In all honesty, I’m afraid to say anything. I don’t want to ruin this with words. We need to talk, need to figure out more of our problems, but today…today I just want us.

I think we owe each other that.

“How about you sit down and let me do the rest?”

The batter bowl in hand, ready to pour on to the skillet, I look over my shoulder. “I’ve got it.”

“Wasn’t a question. With all the shit lately, least a man can do is make his wife breakfast.”

Okay. I can’t really argue with that.

I set the bowl down and let him take over.

“I’ll just go wake London up.”

He nods, but stays focused on the cooking.
